AI Toolkit: Creating Characters
Last updated: August 4, 2026
Characters let you save a person's likeness once and reuse it across generations, instead of retyping the same description every time. Once saved, a Character can be attached to a prompt and tagged directly in your generations, keeping the same face recognizable from one image or video to the next.
Where to find Characters
Characters live inside the prompt box, next to your other reference options.
- From the AI Toolkit homepage, click the + (reference) icon in the prompt box.
- Select Character from the menu. You'll see options for Create new, My Library, and your 3 most recently used Characters.
Note: The Character option only appears for models that support image references. See Supported models below.
Creating a new Character
- Click the + icon in the prompt box, then select Character > New.
- Upload a photo by dragging it in or clicking to browse. A photo is required — the Create character button stays disabled until one is added.
- Enter a Character Name. This is also required.
- Click Create character.
You're returned to the prompt box with your new Character already attached as a reference chip.
💡 Tip: Use a clear, front-facing, well-lit photo for the most consistent results.
Using a Character in a generation
- Click the + icon in the prompt box, then select Character > My Library.
- In the My Library modal, click the Characters tab (alongside Toolkit Creations, Studio Creations, and My Uploads).
- Select the Character you want to use.
- Click Use this character. The modal closes and the Character is added to your prompt as a reference chip.
Once a Character is attached, type @ in the prompt field to tag it directly by name, the same way you'd tag an image reference.
Note: @ tagging is only available for models that support prompt tagging.
Turning an existing creation into a Character
- Open My Library and find the image you want to use.
- Click the Use menu on that asset.
- Select Use as character.
The image becomes a new saved Character, and you're taken to the Characters tab with it already selected and ready to use.
Managing your Characters
Click the three-dot menu on any Character tile to:
- Edit — update the name and/or photo. Changing only the name updates instantly; uploading a new photo regenerates the Character. Save changes stays disabled until something's actually changed.
- Delete — permanently remove the Character after confirming. If it was attached to your current prompt, its reference chip is cleared too.
Supported models
Characters currently work with:
- Seedream 5.0 Pro
- Seedream 5.0
- Seedance 2.0, Seedance 2.0 Mini, and Seedance 2.0 Fast
- Gemini Omni Flash
- Veo 3.1
- Nano Banana Pro, Nano Banana Lite, and Nano Banana 2
More models are being added over time. The Character option only appears for models that accept image references — for video, that means models with image-reference support; for image, the same applies (start/end-frame-only models aren't included).
Good to know
- Characters are created from a single uploaded photo.
- Only Characters you create yourself appear in your library.
